Workshop Learning Objectives
Objective – Understand the Signs and Behavior of Children and Youth who are Grieving
Children and youth grieve differently than adults. In this part of the workshop, you will learn:
Similarities and differences between adult/children’s grief
A child’s understanding of death at different ages
The 3 common feelings expressed by children and youth after a death
How secondary losses affect the grieving process
The signs and behaviors that a child or youth is struggling with grief
Objective – Understand the Effective Responses when Supporting Children and Youth
With the right tools, you can help a child work through their grief with healthy and effective coping strategies.
In this part of the workshop, you will learn:
How to tell children the truth about death
Ways to support children and youth while they are grieving
What to say and what not to say to a child who is grieving
Ways to allow children to say good bye
How expressive art can help when finding the words are difficult
How to grieve yourself while helping your child grieve
Objective – Understand the Tools and Resources Available for Parents, Guardians and Professionals
Where do you go when you need help? Who can you turn to? In the final part of this workshop, you will learn:
Local community resources and programs available to help a grieving child
Benefits of professional counselling and children’s grief groups
Helpful websites, books and other resources to help a grieving child
